If a factory adapter (part #
191-419-514-A) has been installed to allow the use of a later model steering wheel, you
are faced with the challenge of removing it. It's easiest do this while the steering
column is still in the car so it's held firmly in place. A pair of ViceGrips and a
puller are common tools that can be used to removed the adapter. A bearing splitter is a better idea than the ViceGrips if you have one. Here is a page on VWVortex showing the bearing splitter (local copy). |
|
Remove the 13mm bolt securing the steering column to the universal joint.
Remove the leaf spring and it's retaining clip by prying with a flathead screwdriver.

Remove the four 6mm socket-head bolts that attached the steering column tube to the body.
